The Hilbert transform of horizontal gaze position during natural image classification by saccades

چکیده
Eye movements are a behavioral response that can be involved in tasks as complicated as natural image classification. This report confirms that proand anti-saccades can be used by a volunteer to designate target (animal) or non-target images that were centered 16 degrees off the fixation point. With more than 86% correct responses, 11 participants responded to targets in 470 milliseconds on average, starting as quick as 245 milliseconds. Furthermore, tracking the gaze position is considered a powerful method in the studies of recognition as the saccade response times, ocular dynamics and the events around the response time can be calculated from the data sampled 240 times per second. The Hilbert transform is applied to obtain the analytic signal from the horizontal gaze position. Its amplitude and phase are used to describe differences between saccades that may testify to the recognition process.

Head-free reading of horizontally and vertically arranged texts
Parameters of eye and head movements and their coordination in reading horizontally and vertically arranged texts were compared. Reading was faster for horizontally arranged than for vertically arranged texts by 24%, primarily due to larger gaze amplitude for horizontal reading, and thus smaller numbers of saccades and fixations. The higher velocity of gaze saccades for given amplitudes in hori...
متن کاملIs Mislocalization during Saccades Related to the Position of the Saccade Target within the Image or to the Gaze Position at the End of the Saccade?
A stimulus that is flashed around the time of a saccade tends to be mislocalized in the direction of the saccade target. Our question is whether the mislocalization is related to the position of the saccade target within the image or to the gaze position at the end of the saccade. We separated the two with a visual illusion that influences the perceived distance to the target of the saccade and...
متن کاملCollicular microstimulation during passive rotation does not generate fixed gaze shifts.
We investigated whether saccades evoked by electrical stimulation (E-saccades) in the superior colliculus can compensate for passive sinusoidal head rotation in yaw so as to keep the rapid gaze shift constant. After accounting for variations in E-saccade onset position, we found significant horizontal metric changes, proportional to head velocity, in 31 of 37 experiments in 2 monkeys. Vertical ...
متن کاملNovel Eye Movement Disorders in Whipple’s Disease—Staircase Horizontal Saccades, Gaze-Evoked Nystagmus, and Esotropia
Whipple's disease, a rare systemic infectious disorder, is complicated by the involvement of the central nervous system in about 5% of cases. Oscillations of the eyes and the jaw, called oculo-masticatory myorhythmia, are pathognomonic of the central nervous system involvement but are often absent. Typical manifestations of the central nervous system Whipple's disease are cognitive impairment, ...
متن کاملTransient torsion during and after saccades
In five normal subjects, we analyzed uncalled for torsion (blips) during and after horizontal and vertical saccades. Torsion was defined as movement out of Listing's plane. During horizontal saccades in downward gaze the abducting eye extorted and the adducting eye intorted. The direction of the blips reversed in upward gaze. Peak torsional amplitudes (up to 1-2 deg) were always reached during ...
